Description
What does this Excel-based app do?
This Excel sheet helps the user check the strength and adequacy of a lifting beam used for lifting operations. Performs bending, shear, and lateral torsion checks (for I-beams)
It calculates the design load, the Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF) and lifting point loads.
It calculates the different forces on the lifting beam and checks if the bifting beam is adequate.
It can be used for lifting beams fabricated with I-beam, a hollow pipe or a hollow rectangular beam.
How to use?
The user needs to provide inputs such as the lifted object weight and COG, rigging weight etc.
The user also needs to provide the properties of the lifting beam – dimensions, yield strength, elasticity etc.
All inputs are in blue cells. The other cells should be left untouched.
Some default values for some inputs are provided. These can be used when actual values are not available.
Assumptions and limitations
1. The lifting lugs on the top and bottom of the beam are on the same vertical. The lifting points on the lifted object are directly below the beam lifting lugs.
2. Spreader beams – which take compressive forces – are NOT covered under this application.
3. The lifting beam is assumed to be horizontal.
